Hi,
Congratulations on protecting the reserve. It’s great to have such a fantastic piece of bushland on our doorstep. It’s definitely worth saving. Just a small example why this habitat is important. Until recently, I never knew that it is home to some echidnas. We got a huge surprise on Fri 19/11/10. Around 4pm we found an echidna walking around in our front yard. We live on Caprera Rd, Northmead, and it can get busy with cars in the afternoon with people returning home from work, so we got a pair of gardening gloves and put “Spikey” (as my daughters named it) into a cardboard box and took it down to the bush behind our house which I understand is part of the Bidjigal reserve. It then dug itself into the ground, which is what it started doing just before we put it in the box. After this bit of excitement I looked up the echidna habitat distribution, and found that they’re supposed to have a little colony in Bidjigal reserve. It’s fantastic and keep up the good work of protecting these wonderful animals and providing a habitat for them. It was a real treat for my whole family to see an echidna in our very own front yard!

Like Ryan, I too have been visiting the reserve regularly in the past few years and enjoy the natural environment in this unique urban setting. When I heard about the development, I was worried about the potential impacts this will have on the area and our access to it. I sincerely hope Council will make the right decision and keep the area as is.

I may be on the other side of the world but I am following your activities with baited breath. Bidjigal Reserve mustn’t suffer the same fate as Lever Park. You must keep your supporters motivated and get as much publicity as you can. Don’t let them tell you that Go-Ape blends into the environment, there is nothing less natural than a tree denuded of most of it’s lower branches with a platform nailed to it at the top. And don’t forget the healthy trees which will have to be felled and the zip wires and the landing sites and the fact that the wildlife disappears along with most of the ground cover which Go-Ape kindly removes.
If that picture doesn’t keep the momentum going “down under” I don’t know what will. Good luck and I hope that Aussie people power wins out.

Please count me in on any further efforts. I attended on 7 Sept. Have also emailed Bidjigal reserve offering help following your recent posting but have not received a reply. Where do things go from here? I have contacted the council but have not received a reply.Do we need to advertise more?

Congratulations and Thanks

I would personally like to thank all BRAG members and other members of the community for their commitment and the way in which we have all pulled together to oppose this misuse of such a special environment.

I would especially like to thank Peter, Tony and Michael for the excellent presentations on Monday night. By the silence during your presentations, it was obvious that all the hours of preparation had been worthwhile. Although the fight is by no means over yet we have made a significant impression. People Power is alive and well.

I would like to add my thanks to everyone concerned - the speakers (who were wonderful), those who printed and distributed flyers and the petition, and those who ignored the weather and attended the meeting. The 'Save Bidjigal Reserve' badges were brilliant, Paula! But most especially, I would like to thank Michael for his tireless work on our behalf. He is the one who has been keeping us on track, making sure we rely on well-reasoned and researched arguments, without giving in to rumour and hysteria. For those of you who were unable to make it on the night, you can read the backgrounder handed out on the night. It contains a summary of the submissions received by Council.

I wish to congratulate you on your fight against this development. I have been coming to this area for many years to enjoy the bush. I know of many others who also love this area and will be happy to help stop this proposal from going ahead.
